{"id":340,"date":"2007-08-28T23:25:52","date_gmt":"2007-08-29T08:25:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/2007\/08\/28\/no-halibut-and-robbed-of-shrimp\/"},"modified":"2007-08-28T23:25:52","modified_gmt":"2007-08-29T08:25:52","slug":"no-halibut-and-robbed-of-shrimp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/2007\/08\/28\/no-halibut-and-robbed-of-shrimp\/","title":{"rendered":"No Halibut and Robbed of Shrimp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We went back out on the water today in search of big shrimp and and small halibut.\u00a0 It was an aboslutly beautfiul day outside.\u00a0 Blue sky over mountains surrounding the sea.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/files\/2007\/08\/jacks_bay.jpg\" title=\"Jacks Bay\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/files\/2007\/08\/jacks_bay.jpg\" alt=\"Jacks Bay\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our first mission to soak some herring in about 200 feet of water.\u00a0 The crazy thing was we were only a couple hundred yards off shore and we were already in pretty deep water.\u00a0 We fished and fished and fished for about 3 hours with a few nibbles here and there.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/files\/2007\/08\/dad_fishing.jpg\" title=\"Dad Fishing\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/files\/2007\/08\/dad_fishing.jpg\" alt=\"Dad Fishing\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Without any luck on the halibut end of things we decided to head over to try our luck with the shrimp.\u00a0 We found our orange buoy floating just off shore.\u00a0 We started pulling up the 400 feet of line with a pot puller and it came to a halt.\u00a0 The pots were stuck on the bottom.\u00a0 Uh-oh&#8230;\u00a0 We pulled and pulled and were only gaining in inches.\u00a0 The fuse on the pot puller burned out and we were attempting things by hand.\u00a0 I secured the line while dad went in search of a new fuse.\u00a0 With a new fuse installed the pot puller\u00a0 was up and running again which freed up our hands to coil the massive amounts of line.\u00a0 The pot puller was able to free the ocean floors grip on our shrimp pots and they were soon heading for the surface.\u00a0 Our first pot empty\u00a0 :(.\u00a0 We had five down.\u00a0 The next pot had 2 measly shrimp inside.\u00a0 As the third pot came into view we suddenly realized what was causing our misfortune in the shrimping business.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/files\/2007\/08\/octostuck.jpg\" title=\"Octostuck\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/files\/2007\/08\/octostuck.jpg\" alt=\"Octostuck\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thats right an octopus was in our pot.\u00a0 We think he was swimming along and found the shrimp buffet.\u00a0 Now we can only assume how this went down but we believe it went something like this&#8230;..<\/p>\n<p>[QUICKTIME http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/files\/2007\/08\/octostory.mov 320 260]<\/p>\n<p>So when we pulled the pot out of the water here is what we got.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/files\/2007\/08\/octostuck.jpg\" title=\"Octostuck\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/files\/2007\/08\/octostuck.jpg\" alt=\"Octostuck\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We got him out of the pot and put him in a bucket.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t long before he was trying to make is break for freedom.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/files\/2007\/08\/octoescape.jpg\" title=\"Octoescape\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/files\/2007\/08\/octoescape.jpg\" alt=\"Octoescape\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We took a look at him for a little while and then let him go.<\/p>\n<p>[QUICKTIME http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/files\/2007\/08\/octofree.mov 320 260]<\/p>\n<p>Even though he cleaned out a few of our pots we were able to take some shrimp home.\u00a0 Here is what one of them looked like.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/files\/2007\/08\/big_shrimp.jpg\" title=\"Big Shrimp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/files\/2007\/08\/big_shrimp.jpg\" alt=\"Big Shrimp\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was a fun day on the water even though we weren&#8217;t very successful with our endevors.\u00a0 Tomorrow it sounds like my dad and I are going to go do a little flying if the weather cooperates.
