{"id":363,"date":"2007-09-27T23:10:56","date_gmt":"2007-09-28T08:10:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/2007\/09\/27\/st-lawerence-island\/"},"modified":"2007-09-27T23:10:56","modified_gmt":"2007-09-28T08:10:56","slug":"st-lawerence-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/2007\/09\/27\/st-lawerence-island\/","title":{"rendered":"St. Lawerence Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Im back up in Alaska now working on shooting video at each of the Bering Strait School Districts schools.\u00a0 Each one is located in a different village on the Bering Strait in Northwest Alaska.\u00a0 I started my trip two days ago (Tuesday)\u00a0 out in St. Michael.\u00a0 Dan Edie the principal there is a good friend of mine so it was nice to spend some time with him.\u00a0 I got the footage that I had missed in my previous visit and after one night there I was off to Savoonga.\u00a0 Savoonga is one of two villages located on St. Lawrence Island.\u00a0 It is the biggest of the BSSD schools and like many of the villages in the area is situated right on the edge of the ocean.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/files\/2007\/09\/sva_cliff.jpg\" title=\"Savoonga Cliffs\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/files\/2007\/09\/sva_cliff.jpg\" alt=\"Savoonga Cliffs\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Two of the teachers Doug and Michelle graciously hosted me.\u00a0 Doug took me out around the village on his honda helping me get some amazing video of an Arctic Fox searching for lemmings.\u00a0 I stayed the night with them and finished up shooting in the morning.\u00a0 Then I hopped a plane to Gambell which is the other village on the island.\u00a0 Gambell is another one of the bigger schools in BSSD.\u00a0 I had never seen Gambell before not even from the air.\u00a0 I had stopped in Savoonga briefly last year, so I kind of new what to expect when I went there this time, but Gambell was completely new.\u00a0 I really like the surrounding area.\u00a0 The village itself is sitting on a huge gravel pad.\u00a0 The gravel is made up of round rocks that is 70 feet deep.\u00a0 It is quite difficult to walk on.\u00a0 Every step you take your feet roll back about half your stride, so its tough going.\u00a0 I had wonderful weather and armed with a honda and one of the local students (Mike) was running around shooting video in no time.\u00a0 The principal Steve and his wife put me up in their house and fed me a very tasty dinner.\u00a0 Its nice to have a real bed to sleep in at all my stops so far.\u00a0 After dinner I went back out to shoot a little more video.\u00a0 It was a beautiful evening out, and didn&#8217;t want to waste a great rain free opportunity to get some more video.\u00a0 Behind Gambell is a big mountain and I figured I&#8217;d get some good footage if I climbed up there.\u00a0 So I drove the schools honda to the base of the mountain and hiked up from there.\u00a0 Defenetly worth the effort.\u00a0 Up on top you can see in every direction.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/files\/2007\/09\/gam.jpg\" title=\"Gambell\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/files\/2007\/09\/gam.jpg\" alt=\"Gambell\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The island surrounded by the blue waters of the Bering Sea is just beautiful.\u00a0 I was able to get some great video of the village from up above, and watch the sun rays shine through the clouds above.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/files\/2007\/09\/gam_rays.jpg\" title=\"Sun Rays\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/files\/2007\/09\/gam_rays.jpg\" alt=\"Sun Rays\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/files\/2007\/09\/gam_rock_rays.jpg\" title=\"Gambell Rocky Top\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/files\/2007\/09\/gam_rock_rays.jpg\" alt=\"Gambell Rocky Top\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After I got the video I wanted I just spent some time sitting up there enjoying the view and feeling the wind blow through my ummm hat and coat.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude09\u00a0 It was nice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/files\/2007\/09\/gam_me_rays.jpg\" title=\"Me on Gambell Mountain\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/files\/2007\/09\/gam_me_rays.jpg\" alt=\"Me on Gambell Mountain\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My plans for tomorrow (Friday) are to shoot video in the school and a couple other places around town and then I&#8217;ll be off to Teller for a night, and then to my old stomping ground Brevig Mission to stay with AnnMaire and C.O.\u00a0 So far I&#8217;ve had amazing weather, and great hosts.
