I am currently on my second flight for the day.\u00a0 Sharosha, Swenson and myself are flying to Stebbins to broadcast the Eskimo dance festival, which is held there every year.\u00a0 I am pretty excited.\u00a0 It sounds like a great time to enjoy the local culture.\u00a0 Sharosh and Swenson will be broadcasting the opening ceremony out to all the other schools in our district using “Live Channel” on an Apple Powerbook through a “Pollycom” unit over a videoconferencing stream.\u00a0 All 14 other sites in our district will be able to watch.\u00a0 We were planning to do a webcast allowing anyone in the world to watch.\u00a0 The event kind of snuck up on us, and that just didn’t work out.\u00a0 I’m kind of bummed.\u00a0 That would have been really exciting to have that kind of coverage.\u00a0It is a beautiful day out.\u00a0 Not a cloud in the sky, the sun is shining down on white sparkling surroundings.\u00a0 The sun is just off the horizon to the south, skimming the surface before it falls out of sight around 4:30 in the evening.\u00a0 There are few places on this earth that are more spectacular (on the nice days).\u00a0 We are flying in a Beechcraft B200, one of Bering Air’s newer airplanes.\u00a0 They just flew it up to Nome after Christmas.\u00a0 They have some pretty nice instruments in the dash of this one.\u00a0 They say “Chelton” on them.\u00a0 I have never heard of the company before, but the displays are in color, and show you what is in front of you.\u00a0 For example, when we were taxing down the runway, it showed a digital runway in front of us, and sure enough when we got to the end, it showed the end of the runway on the display.\u00a0 Once we were in flight, it showed a series of green boxes going off into the distance.\u00a0 I assume to show the plot where to fly.\u00a0 We ended up flying through all of them.\u00a0 We are currently flying at about 190 Knots, and at 15,500 ft elevation.\u00a0 We are flying to Unalakleet first, picking up a couple of people, and then heading to Stebbins.\u00a0We were supposed to be leaving Brevig at 12:40 P.M. today, but the plane that was picking us up decided to head to Tin City, and then Wales before stopping off to get us.\u00a0 So we didn’t make it into Nome until 3:00 P.M.\u00a0 I didn’t eat lunch today planning on getting some Chinese food in Nome.\u00a0 Since we had such a late departure, I had just enough time to run to the Wells Fargo in Nome and deposit a check.\u00a0\u00a0 Banking is few and far between in the bush.\u00a0I was talking to Sharon (our SFA consultant from Washington) who was staying at our house the last couple of nights.\u00a0\u00a0 She has been to Tin City before.\u00a0 It is located between Wales and Brevig on the Seward Peninsula.\u00a0 It used to be a military station (I assume back in the cold war days) but now only two people man just a weather station.\u00a0 There is a “road” between it and Wales.\u00a0 While Sharon was doing an SFA site visit in Wales, she took a ride out there with a couple of the local teachers.\u00a0 It is basically a deserted city.\u00a0 There is a hotel, buildings all over the place.\u00a0 They have a pretty big runway as I understand, and only two people live there. Sharon said she had a little tour from one of the guys that works there, and said that the hotel rooms look really nice with TV’s and the whole nine yards.\u00a0 I think it would be pretty cool to take a look around.\u00a0 It’s just amazing to me that they would just up and leave everything like that.\u00a0C.O. got my snowmachine up and running again.\u00a0 We pulled it into his shop a couple of days ago, and he worked it over a bit.\u00a0 Charged the battery up and worked on the chain case.\u00a0 It is now running like a dream.\u00a0 We are hoping to cut a hole in the ice this weekend and drop a crab pot down.\u00a0 If we are lucky in a week, we’ll have fresh king crab for dinner.\u00a0 Well, we are starting our decent, so I had better get going.\u00a0 I’ll post a little more after the day is over, hopefully with some pictures.<\/font><\/p>\n
