{"id":455,"date":"2005-01-10T13:36:06","date_gmt":"2005-01-10T22:36:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/finding-a-culprit\/"},"modified":"2005-01-10T13:36:06","modified_gmt":"2005-01-10T22:36:06","slug":"finding-a-culprit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/2005\/01\/10\/finding-a-culprit\/","title":{"rendered":"Finding a Culprit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font face=\"Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"-1\">Well&#8230; The kids are off to P.E. right now.\u00a0 It&#8217;s nice to be sitting in a quite classroom.\u00a0 After school on Saturday one of our teachers brought me some stuff she found on one of the school&#8217;s printers that wasn&#8217;t exactly school appropriate.\u00a0 So to find out whom the culprits was I first had to find out which site it came from.\u00a0 Luckily on one of the inappropriate pictures there was a water mark (text over the graphic showing ownership) that gave some sort of a web address, and there was a banner at the top of the page.\u00a0 So I tried the site that was watermarked on the picture and it turned out to be a website for video games.\u00a0 No porn there, or links to porn.\u00a0 So I thought I was at a dead end until I started to examine the top of the page.\u00a0 There was a site index, no links that gave the www. &#8212;&#8211;.com, but names.\u00a0 So I goggled one of the names of the links and what do you know, I found the site in question.\u00a0 So now I had the site, but how do you find out who has visited it you ask?\u00a0 Well this morning I called up GCI School Access (our ISP).\u00a0 They run our Internet filtering via a proxy.\u00a0 So I told them my problem and they asked for the site in question, and he gave me an IP address.\u00a0 Problem being it was MY ADDRESS.\u00a0 Mine was the only one there, which was really confusing.\u00a0 He did a little more looking and that I was the only one who typed in the entire address with the &#8220;www&#8221; at the beginning of the address.\u00a0 The other users had just typed in the part of the address that followed the &#8220;www&#8221;.\u00a0 So I now have a list of like 5 IP addresses to find.\u00a0 To locate those I find an IP that is in use that is on the list.\u00a0 Using my computer I ping that address (send out packets of info and bounce like radar).\u00a0 While the packets are being sent our I go to the switch and unplug one connection at a time until the packets don&#8217;t go through.\u00a0 That tells me what port the computer is getting its internet connection from.\u00a0 Then I locate that switch and it is either connected to a computer directly or to a airport base station that is giving the connection wirelessly to a computer.\u00a0 Once I find if I can have a talk with the class about appropriate computer use.\u00a0 That\u2019s my exciting news for now.\u00a0 Looks like the kids are back from P.E.\u00a0 Gotta go\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well&#8230; The kids are off to P.E. right now.\u00a0 It&#8217;s nice to be sitting in a quite classroom.\u00a0 After school on Saturday one of our teachers brought me some stuff she found on one of the school&#8217;s printers that wasn&#8217;t exactly school appropriate.\u00a0 So to find out whom the culprits was I first had to [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[16],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-455","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-old-blog"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/455","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=455"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/455\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=455"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=455"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/bbryson.com\/bill\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=455"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
