For the past 6 years I’ve had something big to transition me out of the school year and into vacation. There were trips home from the North, traveling abroad, new jobs to prepare for, U-Hauls to unpack, a sister’s wedding… but this summer’s start has been different. This summer I dropped Bill off in the Boundary Waters on my first day of vacation, and I came home to an empty schedule.
The past few days have reminded me of how I used to struggle with the first days of vacation when I was younger – when I was “stuck” at the end of Raps Road without a license. I remember wandering over to Gram’s house and whining to her, “I’m bored!” And she would be quick to tell me how there was no possible way I could be bored out here. Once, she even sat down and wrote a list of all the things I could keep busy with. She was right; there is plenty of fun to be had during the summer months.
So, that’s my goal this summer. Instead of worrying about how quickly these weeks are going to fly by, I’m going to work to appreciate the endless possibilities that summer brings.
Were cleaning cupboards for two bits or playing hide-the-button on Gram’s list?? How about baking a WaCkY CaKe or painting a bowl of fruit?
Remember when gram would say “If you just pick up for 10 minutes every day…”

Happy anniversary (belated). Hope you enjoy the summer. I miss summer vacation! Wish I had one.
I’m taking the family blog private–you can e-mail me to get added to the list.
