It's Official: 10 Feet Of Snow For January!

We heard on Thursday that Friday was going to be a real snow dump and that it would be followed by rain. (This was After, our official 10 feet recorded by the Valdez Weather service!)

(Just a random shot of a neighbor’s car)

Rain after having as much snow as we’ve had really gets people up on the roof or out to their boats quickly. When it rains the snow becomes like a huge sponge causing that much more weight. Lots of high school kids are making a little extra cash shoveling for people. They charge a round $200 a roof.

(This is an “Old Town” home moved after the 64′ Earthquake that’s around the cornor from us.)

So I woke up Friday morning at 5:30 a.m. to around 18 inches of fresh snow. After shoveling a path down the sidewalk I scooped enough snow to get the car out the garage for work and walked Rudy before getting ready for school. The pass was closed all day. There were 2 avalanches. Nobody was coming in or out of Valdez.

Sometime on Friday the snow that had been accumulating on the roof this past week dumped onto the back deck so I knew Saturday was going to be a busy day of shoveling. I’ve been lucky. Though I’ve started and ended my days this week shoveling, I’ve had a little help from our neighbor across the street while I’m at work. That was a real blessing!

Check out the Saturday morning 8:30 sunrise that greeted me. Yup! That’s some of the snow that needed to get removed.

While I was shoveling a way, the snow load on the garage roof gave way. It’s wonderful having a snow shedding roof!

Check out the chunk that came off….. And notice the neighbor’s yard! They don’t have much window viewing left!

Rudy kept me company while I shoveled the back deck. It took me about an hour.

TA DA!  I finished the job!  Bill will be pleased!

Take note Bunny, I am shoveling up…..

Here’s the view from our bedroom. Yup! I could climb out the 2nd story window and walk down if necessary. Sigh…..

I told Zac I’d put up a picture of the various snow implements we use. They all have their specific use.

You may be curious, why the push broom? When I come home from work, often there is a good foot or two of snow on the car roof. We can push the snow off easily using the broom. Also, after the car comes out of the garage there are often standing puddles of water. The broom works well to push it all out the door.

Enough snow stories! I’ve got the house cleaned up and Bill should be coming home within the hour. There’s a bottle of cabernet chilling. It will be good to have him home! Then HE can take over the shoveling again! :)
